I worked on this project as a contractor for Soel Yachts (www.soelyachts.com). Everything you see on this page is work I contributed to the team as the lead designer of this project.
Mission
The mission was clear from the beginning: Buidling a fully sustainable solar electric Leasure yacht for silent cruising with trans-ocean capabilities. The yacht should combine state of the art technology with modern design. With no noise distractions on board, the 62ft composite eco yacht should offer an oasis of tranquility for up to nine people and three crew.
Insights
To have a serious range without coming to a standstill, a lot of solar panels had to be placed on both roofs. The large roof structure offered the opportunity to design elegant canopies for the front and aft. lounge. However, the increasing volume of the roofs created a difficult package to work with. It proved a challenge to preserve the elegant lines of the yacht without having to compromise on the amount of solar panels.
Where many catamaran yachts use different height levels in the interior, we saw an opportunity to differentiate ourselves from the competition. By shifting the deck height differences the right way, the opportunity was created to realize an open floor plan that extends trough the entire vessel.
